Cultural Competency

Cultural competency is defined as the ability to understand, appreciate, and interact with people of cultures or religions different from one's own. This system is circled around the idea of respecting diversity and accepting differences, all aspects which are crucial to working in the health field.

Sample of Work

Statistics have shown that some racial and ethnic groups in America suffer more from certain health issues compared to others. As a demonstration of cultural competency, I wrote an informative research paper on the health disparity of unprotected sex amongst Black Americans. Using the Socio-Ecological Model, I analyzed the risk factors of this health issue on the individual, relationship, and community levels. I also studied three different health promotion programs that were implemented to reduce this behavior and evaluated each intervention based on levels of effectiveness.
